Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) supply a free or low-cost router/modem combo when you sign up for service. While convenient, these devices are frequently among the weakest links in home network security. Here’s why:

1. Designed for Cost, Not Security

• ISPs prioritize cheap, mass-produced hardware to reduce their subsidy costs.
• Manufacturers cut corners on processing power, memory, and security features to keep prices low.
• Result: Basic packet filtering and NAT (which hides your devices but doesn’t actively block threats) instead of modern protections.

2. Outdated or Rarely Updated Firmware

• Many ISP routers ship with firmware that is already months or years old.
• Automatic updates are often disabled, unreliable, or completely absent.
• ISPs are slow to patch known vulnerabilities — some routers remain unpatched for years after major exploits are public.
• Once support ends (common after 2–4 years), the device becomes a permanent security risk.

3. Weak Default Configurations

• Factory-set admin passwords like “admin/admin” or printed on the device (easily guessable or found via public lookups).
• UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) often enabled by default — allows devices to open ports automatically, exposing your network.
• Remote management (TR-069 protocol) frequently enabled, giving the ISP (and potentially attackers) external access.
• Wi-Fi encryption may default to outdated WPA2 or even WPA, instead of the stronger WPA3.

4. Limited Security Capabilities

• Lack deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, or application-layer filtering.
• No advanced threat intelligence, malware blocking, or behavioral analysis.
• Poor or non-existent support for VPNs, ad/malware blocking, or IoT segmentation.
• Inadequate logging and monitoring — you often can’t easily see what’s happening on your network.
